What is a QR code?

A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern Web design, web sites, Internet solutions, Visual Design, Web Sites, Podcasts, Multimedia, Usability Engineering, customer service, newsletters, multimedia, video, Nelsonecomon white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data. Common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994, the QR code is one of the most popular types of
two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the initialism of Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

How to “Scan” QR Codes

To scan QR Codes, you need a QR scanner App on your mobile device. There are many QR scanners out there, these are just a few the choices:

iPhone

QR Scanner (free)

Android

Barcode Scanner (free)

  1. Run the ‘Market’ App on your Android-powered device.
  2. Tap the ‘Menu’ button and select ‘Search’.
  3. Enter ‘Barcode Scanner’ into the search field.
  4. Once you’ve found the ‘Barcode Scanner’ App, tap it and tap install.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to proceed with the installation.

Nokia

Nokia Barcode Scanner (free)

Some Nokia handsets already have Nokia Barcode Reader installed by the manufacturer. If not, Click here to download it from the Nokia website

Blackberry

Blackberry Messenger (free)

Blackberry Messenger (BBM) can read QR codes and open the web site for you. If you do not already have Blackberry Messenger on your phone, Click here to download it from the Blackberry website.

  1. Open BBM and then click “Scan a Group Barcode”
  2. When the image is in focus, BBM will prompt you if you would like it to open the site

Other options for Blackberry include NeoReader and i-nigma (we have not personally tested these – they come recommended by Blackberry users.)

Ok, I have an app, now how do I “Scan” these things?

To scan QR Codes, start your QR Scanner App and follow the on-screen instructions. You may see a frame in which to focus the QR code. Align the QR code in this box, and the application will scan and read the QR code data. Depending on the type of QR code you may be

  • redirect to a website
  • given contact information
  • given a geo location
  • provided a phone number
  • SMS a message
  • displayed a text message on your phone
  • given a calendar event
