We get this question daily. There’s no easy answer, however here are some guidelines for improving your dog or cat’s diet.
The FACTS: Dogs are omnivores, but lean toward the carnivore (meat eaters). Cats are strict carnivores (meat eaters). For good health, they both need meat as the foundation of their diet. So, it makes sense that any diet you choose for your pet should be meaty. Many grocery store brand AND many prescription dog foods are NOT meaty. In fact, they are loaded with grains and other carbs, fillers, chemical preservatives and dyes. Don’t just look at the picture on the bag, actually look at the list of ingredients.
QUIZ QUESTION: Which is a better choice for your pet?
- Pet food #1: Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, propylene glycol…
- Pet food #2: Chicken, chicken meal, whole brown rice, rice bran, chicken fat preserved with vitamin E, beet pulp…
Answer: Of course, Pet Food #2 is the better choice. It makes sense, doesn’t it?
